Description
IDENT is an identifier created by IPUMS to uniquely identify individual diary days within surveys. Individuals in surveys with multiple diary days will have a different IDENT value for each unique diary day. Within samples where respondents recorded a single diary day, IDENT uniquely identifies these individuals. IDENT is not unique across surveys unless used in combination with SAMPLE.
To uniquely identify only individuals within a survey, users will need to use a combination of HLDID and PERSID in surveys with multiple diary days. HLDID and PERSID are not unique across surveys unless used in combination with SAMPLE.
